The Tulip Garden in Srinagar has become a popular tourist spot, leading to a growing focus on tulip farming in Jammu and Kashmir. To support this, the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Kashmir (SKUAST-K), is setting up a special Centre for Tulip Cultivation in Sagam, Anantnag. The goal is to reduce reliance on tulip bulbs imported from the Netherlands and encourage local production.
To make this project stronger, SKUAST-K is planning to sign an agreement with the Netherlands government for joint development. The Jammu and Kashmir government, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, has set aside Rs 8 crore in the 2025-26 budget to support this initiative.
A key part of the plan is to introduce profitable tulip varieties to different farming groups. Each group will focus on a specific variety to grow and multiply. SKUAST-K will then buy the bulbs from these farmers, helping them earn more while also creating jobs and reducing the need for imports.
