
On Tuesday, the President of India officially appointed senior judicial officers Sanjay Parihar and Shahzad Azeem as judges of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
According to a notification issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice, the appointments were made under clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India. The notification stated that both officers would assume their roles as judges from the date they take charge of their respective offices.
The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Justice Sanjiv Khanna, had recommended their appointments during a meeting held on April 16, 2025.
Following these appointments, the total number of judges in the High Court of J&K and Ladakh has increased to 15. The sanctioned strength of the court includes 25 judges—19 permanent and 6 additional.
