Kashmir’s Tulip Garden Set to Bloom with 17.5 Lakh Flowers Next Week

Kashmir’s famous Tulip Garden, the largest in Asia, is set to open to visitors in the last week of March. This year, over 17.5 lakh tulips of 74 different varieties will bloom gradually, officials said. More than 100 workers and gardeners are working hard to ensure that most of the tulips bloom in time. The garden, spread over 4,500 kanals, sits on the foothills of the Zabarwan mountains and overlooks the beautiful Dal Lake. Officials expect to announce the opening date on March 20. Tulip bulbs are planted in mid-November before winter sets in. By the end of February, when the snow melts, gardeners prepare the soil and remove weeds. Spraying is done as the flowers start growing. Tulips usually begin blooming in late March and last for about 20 days, sometimes up to 25, depending on the variety. These flowers need a temperature between 15°C and 25°C to thrive. In August 2023, the garden was recognized as Asia’s largest by the World Book of Records (London).
