Winter Weather Rolls In: Snowfall in High Areas, Rain Across Plains

Light Snowfall in Kashmir’s High Areas, Rainfall in Plains Brings Drop in Temperature.

Several high-altitude areas in Kashmir saw light snowfall, while the plains experienced rainfall on Friday, leading to a slight dip in temperatures. Locations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg received a dusting of snow overnight. The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain and snow in the next 24 hours, signaling a continued winter pattern even after the official end of the coldest period. Srinagar recorded 0.8 mm of rain, while Qazigund saw light precipitation. Pahalgam had 1.6 mm, Kokernag received 0.4 mm, and Gulmarg saw the heaviest rainfall at 8.2 mm. This weather follows the conclusion of Chillai Kalan, Kashmir’s harshest winter phase. The region has now entered the 20-day Chillai Khurd phase, which is milder but can still bring cold waves and occasional precipitation. After this, Chillai Bacha, a 10-day lighter winter phase, will lead into spring. Meanwhile, two new Western Disturbances are expected to bring more rain and snow to Jammu and Kashmir starting February 1, with effects continuing through February 5. The hilly areas are likely to see fresh snowfall.
