Mughal gardens in Kashmir are a testament to the empire’s artistic grandeur and deep admiration for nature. These gardens, inspired by Persian Charbagh designs, seamlessly blend symmetry, water channels, and lush greenery, creating breathtaking retreats that have stood the test of time.
Shalimar Bagh
One of the most iconic Mughal gardens is Shalimar Bagh, built in 1619 on the right bank of Dal Lake. Designed as a royal retreat, its terraced layout, cascading fountains, and manicured landscapes reflect the harmony between architecture and nature. The garden’s intricate water channels and lush flower beds create a serene ambiance, inviting visitors to walk through history.
Nishat Bagh
Another gem, Nishat Bagh, was designed in 1633 by Asif Khan, a noble of the Mughal court. Overlooking the Dal Lake, this “Garden of Joy” is known for its 12 terraces, symbolizing the zodiac signs. Achabal Garden
Achabal Garden, originally called “Bagh-e-Begum Abad,” was built in 1620 by Empress Noor Jahan as her personal retreat. Fed by a pristine spring, its terraced steps, flowing water channels, and central pavilion blend seamlessly with the region’s topography. Unlike other Mughal gardens, Achabal’s informal yet elegant layout makes it a unique jewel in Kashmir’s heritage.
