A two-day workshop on “Scientific Beekeeping,” organized by the Agriculture Production and Farmers’ Welfare Department of Kashmir, commenced on Tuesday at Kashmir Haat, Srinagar. The event, supported by the National Bee Board under the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM), drew participation from beekeepers, farmers, stakeholders, students, and unemployed youth.
The seminar was inaugurated by Mohammad Ilyas Khateeb, Director of Agriculture Kashmir, who emphasized the importance of integrating modern trends and technologies in beekeeping. He also spoke about various financial aid programs available for farmers, aimed at promoting the sector.
Khateeb highlighted the role of beekeeping in boosting farm productivity and sustaining rural livelihoods. He called beekeeping a promising agro-allied activity and shared that under the Horticulture Development Program (HADP), beekeeping would reach new levels of economic growth and job creation. Farmers were informed about various financial incentives, including an 80% subsidy on beekeeping units to support the growth of the industry in the region.
The seminar will continue with practical training sessions on colony management, honey harvesting, and disease prevention techniques. Key figures at the event included Waheed-U-Rehman, Deputy Director of Agriculture Central, Manohar Lal Sharma, Chief Agriculture Officer of Srinagar, and other officials.
