The vision of linking Kashmir to Kanyakumari by rail is taking shape as the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has approved the newly constructed 17 km Katra-Reasi rail track for the transport of both goods and passengers. In an official letter, CRS Dinesh Chand Deshwal gave the green light for the opening of the broad-gauge rail line between Katra and Reasi stations.
This approval completes the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail project in the Firozpur division of Northern Railways. Earlier, the CRS had personally inspected the track in January, both by motor trolley and on foot. A subsequent speed trial conducted from Katra to Banihal showed the trains running safely at speeds up to 110 km/h without any significant issues. Based on the inspection results and safety certifications, the CRS concluded that the track is now ready for public service.
This marks a major advancement in rail infrastructure for Jammu and Kashmir, promising enhanced connectivity and economic opportunities for the region.
