Omar Abdullah Announces 200 Units of Free Electricity for J&K

Jammu and Kashmir is working towards becoming self-sufficient in power generation within the next two years. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that the government is dedicated to ensuring a steady electricity supply and providing 200 units of free power to consumers. To achieve this goal, the Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation (JKSPDC) is focusing on developing hydroelectric projects. The aim is to generate enough power to meet the region’s needs without relying on external sources. In response to a question from National Conference MLA Shamima Firdous, the Chief Minister explained that JKSPDC has partnered with NHPC to create joint ventures like CVPPL and RHPCL. These ventures are responsible for implementing several major hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir. The planned projects include the 1,000 MW Pakal Dul, 624 MW Kiru, 540 MW Kwar, and 850 MW Ratle, all located on the Chenab River in Kishtwar. Together, these projects will generate 3,014 MW of power and are expected to be completed by 2027. Additionally, JKSPDC is working on two more projects: the 37.5 MW Parnai project in Rajouri and the 12 MW Karnah project in Kupwara. By 2027-2028, the total power generation capacity in the region will increase by 3,063 MW. The government has also invited tenders for the 48 MW Lower Kalani project in Kishtwar and a new hydroelectric project in Ganderbal. Seven more projects are in the planning stage. These include the 390 MW Kirthai-I, 258 MW Dulhasti-II, 800 MW Bursar, 1,856 MW Sawalkote, 240 MW Uri-I (Stage II), 89 MW Ujh, and 930 MW Kirthai-II. Once completed, these projects will significantly boost the region’s power supply. However, the Chief Minister pointed out that hydroelectric plants produce less power during winter. To maintain a stable power supply, the government is considering a mix of other energy sources, including thermal and nuclear power. The government is also focusing on renewable energy to meet increasing electricity demands and fulfill international climate commitments. Discussions with the central government are ongoing to develop a Resource Adequacy Plan, which aims to make J&K self-reliant in power generation by 2035. When asked about the provision of 200 free electricity units to consumers, the government confirmed its commitment. The specific measures for this scheme will be outlined during the demand for grants in the power sector.
