Southern Railway is planning to introduce the Amrit Bharat Express, which will connect either Kanyakumari or Rameswaram to Srinagar. The train will cover a distance of over 4,000 kilometres, making travel between the southernmost and northernmost parts of India more convenient.
This train will have a push-pull design with engines at both ends, allowing it to travel at speeds of up to 130 kmph. It is designed to offer better comfort for non-AC passengers, similar to the Vande Bharat Express.
The plan comes at a time when the Katra-Banihal railway section, the last stretch of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, is about to be inaugurated next month. Currently, people from Tamil Nadu can only reach Kashmir by road or air.
According to railway officials, the final decision on starting the Amrit Bharat Express from Kanyakumari or Rameswaram to Srinagar will be made once the new railway line is fully ready for operation. Recently, a Vande Bharat trial run was successfully conducted between New Delhi and Srinagar, bringing the project one step closer to reality.
