The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning of a very high risk of forest fires in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Jammu region, due to a prolonged dry spell. The warning is in effect for the next seven days, until January 30. Dry conditions and low moisture levels, especially in the Chenab valley, have raised concerns. The Kashmir forests currently have enough moisture, but if the dry spell continues into March, the fire risk could increase. J&K’s forest areas are particularly vulnerable due to an 81% rainfall deficit in January, with only 11.4 mm of rain recorded so far. In December, several forest fires were reported, causing significant damage. Authorities urge the public to dial 112 in case of emergencies.
