Kashmir is set to achieve a big success in mustard production this year, with an increase of 36,000 metric tonnes compared to last year.
The total mustard output is expected to reach 143,476.9 metric tonnes, up from 107,476.9 metric tonnes in 2024.
This big jump in production is helping Kashmir cut down its need to import mustard oil. Two years ago, 70–75% of mustard oil was imported. Now, that’s reduced to just 40%.
Agriculture experts say this growth is because farmers planted mustard over a larger area and used better-quality seeds.
The area under mustard cultivation grew by 30,000 hectares — from 110,000 hectares last year to 140,000 hectares this year.
The average mustard production now stands at 10.2 quintals per hectare.
“With a cropping intensity of 182%, we are confident that Kashmir will become self-sufficient in mustard oil within the next four years,” said an Agriculture Department official.
