Dry weather continues in Jammu and Kashmir, but the region is likely to experience a fresh spell of rain and snow starting from January 16. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Srinagar has predicted isolated rain and snow on January 16 and 17, followed by scattered rain and snow across the region on January 18 and 19.
While rain is expected to affect the plains of Jammu, snowfall is likely in the Kashmir Valley and the higher altitudes of the Jammu region. This new weather system is anticipated to break the dry spell and bring a change in conditions.
Meanwhile, temperatures in the Kashmir Valley remain below freezing. According to the latest IMD data, several areas have recorded freezing temperatures, with Srinagar at -4.2°C, Qazigund at -5.6°C, and Pahalgam at -7.8°C. Other places, including Kupwara (-4.7°C), Kokernag (-3.4°C), and Gulmarg (-6.2°C), have also reported sub-zero temperatures. Areas like Sonamarg (-7.8°C), Bandipora (-3.6°C), and Baramulla (-3°C) are similarly experiencing extreme cold, with Shopian (-6.7°C), Anantnag (-5.2°C), and Kulgam (-5.7°C) also reporting chilly conditions.
With the arrival of rain and snow, the region is expected to feel even colder, particularly in the higher altitudes. Authorities have issued advisories to take necessary precautions against the expected weather changes.
