The Jammu and Kashmir government has introduced key measures to boost saffron production, recognizing its importance to the region’s economy.
During a discussion in the Legislative Assembly, the government responded to concerns raised by MLA Justice Hasnain Masoodi about the decline in saffron output. Officials explained that production had fallen in recent years, prompting efforts to improve yields through the National Mission on Saffron. This initiative focuses on adding value to the crop, securing Geographical Indication (GI) certification, and expanding exports. Farmers also faced a sharp decline in saffron prices, which dropped from Rs 22,500 per kilogram to just Rs 2,000 per kilogram, causing financial hardship. However, the government reassured that conditions have improved since implementing the National Mission on Saffron, helping stabilize the industry. To support farmers, the government has built a Spice Park and India International Kashmir Saffron Trading Center (IIKSTC) in Dussu Pampore, under the National Saffron Mission, at a cost of Rs 37.81 crore. This facility will improve market access, and an e-auction system at IIKSTC is expected to help farmers secure better prices.
With these efforts, the government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the saffron sector, ensuring better earnings for farmers and reinforcing the crop’s role in the regional economy.
