The situation in Rajouri’s Badhaal area is gradually improving, with no new cases reported in the past week. Authorities are awaiting forensic results to determine the cause behind the mysterious deaths that have affected 17 people, including 12 children, since December 8, 2024. Dr. Shamim Ahmad, Medical Superintendent at Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri, stated that 11 patients who were admitted last week are now stable and out of danger. None of the patients require ventilators, and they will be discharged soon after consultations with medical experts. In response to the deaths in Budhal village, the area has been declared a containment zone, and hundreds of people who had close contact with the victims were moved to an isolation center at the Government Nursing College in Rajouri. Early investigations indicate that the cause of the deaths may be linked to contaminated food or water. Those affected showed symptoms like irritability, drowsiness, heavy sweating, and breathing problems, which point to poisoning or exposure to toxic substances. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh confirmed that toxins, not an infectious disease, were the cause of the deaths, and ongoing investigations are focused on identifying the source of the contamination. An official involved in the investigation mentioned that a forensic report from the Chandigarh lab is expected within two days. This report will shed light on the toxins involved and help authorities take necessary measures moving forward. Authorities are also exploring the possibility of criminal involvement to rule out intentional contamination. With increased surveillance in the area, medical teams are continuing to monitor the health of the affected individuals and are working with toxicology experts to manage any further developments.
