Kashmiri weaver Farooq Ahmed Mir has been awarded the Padma Shri for his outstanding skills in traditional weaving, honoring his dedication to keeping the craft alive. Starting from humble beginnings, Mir’s love for handloom weaving has earned him recognition across India and inspired others, especially younger generations, to reconnect with their cultural roots.
Living in Srinagar, Mir began weaving as a child and felt deeply honored to receive the prestigious award. Despite not being formally educated, his extraordinary talent and commitment to his work have made him a leader in preserving Kashmir’s rich traditions. “This award is not just for me; it’s for all the artisans who have worked hard to keep our traditions alive,” he said with pride.
Reflecting on his early struggles, Mir shared that many locals once looked down on his profession. “People didn’t always value this work, but I always believed in its beauty and importance,” he said. Now, the recognition he’s received has changed minds and inspired others to take pride in traditional crafts. “Now, many people congratulate me, and it feels like my hard work has been acknowledged,” he smiled.
Mir also voiced concern about the younger generation losing interest in traditional crafts. “Young people need to understand how important it is to preserve these skills. Handloom weaving is not just an art; it can also provide a good livelihood. I hope they will take pride in it,” he urged.
